Sisters in Christ,

Welcome! The Beloved Women's ministry at Freedom Church is beginning a new e-mail devotional based on Jennifer LeClaire's book, The Spiritual Warrior's Guide to Defeating Jezebel. You can sign up to receive weekly devotionals via email, or you can visit this page at your lesuire. I'm excited about this new approach to bible study because it will give you all week to read, process, and pray about the study. If you have questions, write them down and we can discuss at our get together at the end of the month (see the church calendar for scheduled meetings). If you are not able to join in the monthly meetings, feel free to email me and we can discuss electronically. I pray that you will be englightened, encouraged, and that your relationship with Jesus will grow. You can do this!

In His Name,

Camille Trujillo

Week 11: Will the Real Jezebel Please Stand Up

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches (Revelation 2:7)

I pray that through this study you have grasped an understanding of the spirit of Jezebel, and have somewhat of an understanding of how this spirit manifests on a personal level, as well as on a global level.  I am a big believer, though not easy at times, in always asking the Holy Spirit to search my own heart first, before I ask Him to search someone else’s.   I believe it keeps me in a humble state knowing my faults before Him, aware of my desperate need for a Savior, and also the ability to have grace for others.   So I ask you, would you be able to see this spirit influencing you in your life before you became consumed in it?

Jezebel at the Individual Level

Jennifer LeClaire explains that in order for us to have power over this spirit in our own personal lives she quotes Dr. Lester Sumrall’s theory of demon possession.  He suggests there are 7 stages of demon influence in our lives: regression, repression, suppression, depression, oppression, obsession, and possession.  We will be talking about three of them.

Stage One – Regression

The Bible says in Romans 6:4, “Therefore we were buried with Him (Jesus) through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in the newness of life”.  When you vocally proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and invite Him to reign over your life, the scripture is saying that we die to self, and are spiritually born a new creation.  Meaning, the same power that raised Christ from the dead, is the same power that transforms your life, transforms your thought process, how you speak, how you interact with others, the position from which you view life as a whole changes, because you have been given a new spirit, a new birth, and a new heart.  How can you recognize if you are being influenced by the spirit of Jezebel?  When your behavior, your thought process, the company you keep, is no longer that of being transformed by the Holy Spirit and no longer pleasing to God and holy, those old character traits will start to manifest themselves within you.  The Bible refers to it as “putting off that old man” (Colossians 3:9).

Stage Four – Depression

According to WHO, World Health Organization, “Depression is a common mental disorder.  Globally, an estimated 350 million people of all ages suffer from depression.  Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.  More women are affected by depression than men.”    Jennifer LeClaire states that, “Although many people experience depression at one point or another, long-term depression can be associated with an evil spirit.”  Do you remember we read about Elijah, and how after he had just been victorious on Mount Carmel he fled for his life because of the threat Jezebel made (1 Kings 19)?  Self-doubt and depression consumed Elijah, and he felt sorry for himself.  The Lord cares for you, His Word says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.  The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such a contrite spirit” (Psalm 34:17-18).

Stage Five – Oppression

“To oppress means to crush by abuse of power or authority, to burden spiritually or mentally.”  Basically, mental pressure or distress.  Jennifer LeClaire states, “Jezebel may use witchcraft, also known in the Bible as sorcery.  Vine’s Expository Dictionary explains that sorcery, as described in the Bible, signifies primarily the use of medicine, drugs, spells and poisoning.”  We must always keep in mind, the goal of this spirit is to lure you in to idolatry, and sexual immorality, and the battle against this seems to start in the mind.  That’s why the Bible encourages us to stand fast in the Lord! Paul tells us “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy – meditate (think deeply and carefully) on these things” ( Philippians 4:8).  Why?  Because if you do these things, the presence of God’s peace will be with you!

Reflect – In the beginning of this chapter, Jennifer LeClaire writes something that is so insightful, and something that I will ponder on this week and I pray you will also, “You could say that biblical knowledge is power ----- but that is true only if it is applied.  Without careful application, even the most exhaustive study is merely an exercise in religion.”  I remind myself, that the devil has been defeated, yes he has!  When Jesus died on the cross, paid our debt in full, and was raised again, He made a public spectacle of the devil and his angels because of their inability to conquer Him! (Colossians 2:14-15). We must learn to walk, pray, think and live in and with the authority that Jesus Christ freely and graciously has given to us!  We cheat ourselves out of the abundant life He gives to us if we don’t!

Confess – If the Holy Spirit shows you that you are manipulating situations, manipulating your husband, playing emotional games in relationships, or has revealed that Jesus Christ does not hold the throne of your heart (idolatry) you need to repent.  If you are not already, get plugged into a local church, and be involved.  Idolatry and sexual immorality comes in many forms, but with the help of the Holy Spirit we can live a victorious life that is pleasing to God!  Woman of God, rise up ----- act, speak, think and live your life like a conqueror who abides in Jesus Christ!  Be blessed!  XO
